In today’s Lenten Adventure activities, we shared a long-time favorite Lenten activity: the dough Crown of Thorns craft!
This activity is similar to the bean jar activity (don’t know what that is? Sign up for Lenten Adventure to learn!) and just as fun!
Here is a short video to explain this Lenten craft:
Now, here are the directions for how you can create YOUR Crown of Thorns:
Dough Recipe:
- 4 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- Water
- Toothpicks
Mix flour and salt.
Mix enough water to make a stiff clay (a little warmth helps dissolve the salt).
Knead until smooth to remove any air bubbles.
Roll three long ropes and loosely braid them.
Form braid into a circle and stick toothpicks loosely throughout the entire crown (if they are embedded too deeply they cannot be pulled out intact).
Bake at 350° F for an hour or until it is dry and light brown.
Once your Crown of Thorns is done baking, you can spend the entire Lenten Season removing a thorn each time you make a sacrifice!
The goal is to remove all the “thorns” from the crown by Easter!
TIP: Your Crown of Thorns can be displayed on your table during Lent as a meaningful reminder of the liturgical season. Then, you can decorate the “de thorned” crown with flowers on Easter morning!!
