Teaching kids about the Catholic faith is serious business, but it doesn’t have to be dull, painful, or boring!
The key lies in understanding your child’s unique and God-given style of learning! Whether you’re a homeschool mom, elementary teacher, a Faith Formation instructor, or co-op leader, you’ve seen first-hand how every kid learns differently. There are a variety of ways that children can learn, but often, there tends to be one way that your child best absorbs information.
We know how difficult it can be to find educational material that fits each child’s individual needs…that’s why we carry a range of products for every type of learner!
Need Catholic tools for different learning styles? We have broken it down for you below!
Visual Learner
Visual learners need images and charts to fully grasp the material. If your kid loves picture books, studying maps, or doodling…they might fall into this category!
How about filling the home with gorgeous picture books (ones that also teach the Catholic faith)?
Here are some of our favorite resources for visual learners that focus on providing highly detailed images to help them better understand a concept:
My Path to Heaven – based on the traditional St. Ignatius retreat (trusted by Catholics for centuries) and adapted for children, it contains highly detailed pictures that teach essential truths of the Faith!
The Picture Bible – endorsed by none other than Archbishop Fulton Sheen himself! God’s Word will come alive for hours of family reading enjoyment but more importantly, the comic stripe style is great for kids who learn through pictures!
Catechism of the Seven Sacraments – set in a vivid comic-book LEGO®* format with stunning photographs, this book makes profound theological concepts accessible to both the Catholic and the curious, the child and the adult!
A Little Catholic’s First Rosary Prayer Book: Bead-by-Bead – even before they can read words, kids can read pictures–and that’s the wonder of this picture prayer book! Every prayer in the rosary has its own page and its own picture, teaching kids about the mysteries of the rosary from a young age!
Auditory Learner
Auditory learners best access information through sounds and music. These are the kids that love having read-alouds before bedtime rather than reading a book themselves!
Here are some auditory resources your child may enjoy:
Glory Stories – dynamic retellings of the lives of the saints, featuring world-class music, intensive research, and virtues for your children to learn! Now with 16 volumes (our most recent release is all about St. Peter), this collection is perfect for auditory learners who will be drawn in by the different voices, sound effects, and music!
Holy Heroes Rosary CD’s – an easy way to help kids learn this powerful prayer…hearing other kids say the Rosary out loud will encourage them in meditating on the mysteries!
Holy Heroes Stations of the Cross CD – especially if your family is not able to attend the Stations of the Cross, this CD will help auditory learners understand and pray this beautiful Catholic Lenten tradition.
Verbal Learner
Linguistic learners understand better through (you guessed it!)…words! Whether it be by reading or writing, these kids love processing information through text.
For these learners, it is important that you have a way for them to share what they learn from their reading either through writing or a discussion since so much of their processing happens within their mind! Don’t ever mistake their sometimes quieter natures for lack of knowledge–they often have a great depth of understanding for their faith but just need a way to share it with you.
Holy Heroes Spiritual Journal – this is a way for a child to share what they have learned through reading with others. With its unique design, it has helped countless children and adults dive into daily prayer habits! It’s simple, straightforward, and easily adaptable to each family member.
King of the Golden City – Almost 100 years since the original publication, this is the story is an allegory of a little maid and the gracious King who deigned to visit her. Read it before First Communion (or even better, every year during Lent) and use our discussion guide to talk about what you can learn from the story! (Hint: we now carry a NEW special edition for boys too!)
Kinesthetic Learner
Got any kids that tend to squirm, dance, or run laps in the backyard? You might have a physical learner on your hands!
Kinesthetic learners naturally want to use their bodies to understand the world around them…they are super in-touch with their senses and enjoy using all seven to figure things out.
Performing acts of charity as a family is a surefire way to engage your kinesthetic learner. They can help pack blessing bags for the homeless, make dinner for a struggling family, pick out the softest fabric for blankets for the crisis pregnancy center, and more!
Here are some tactile Catholic resources you may find useful:
