In honor of the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death, Pope Leo XIV has declared the Year of Saint Francis!
To celebrate, special plenary indulgences are available to the faithful now through January 10, 2027. Under the usual conditions (Confession, Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Pope), the faithful can receive a plenary indulgence by making a pilgrimage to any Franciscan church or a place of worship dedicated to St. Francis.
This is a wonderful year to see if you have a local Church dedicated to St. Francis in your diocese and “take a pilgrimage” as a family! With a little research, we discovered a parish in our diocese that has a 1st-class relic of St. Francis. Just last summer, we visited a stunning Franciscan Monastery while on a family trip to D.C.
A Lenten Idea for the Year of St. Francis:
