Fijian food is created around a few staple ingredients that are readily available on the archipelago: rice, sweet potatoes, taro (a tropical root vegetable), coconuts, cassava (a starchy shrub), breadfruit, and of course, fish, have made up the majority of the Fijian diet for centuries. Traditional recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, with many dishes remaining relatively unchanged for centuries. Some must-try traditional meals in Fiji include: Lovo, Fiji’s version of barbecue; Kokoda (pronounced Kokonda) a Fijia ceviche, and many more!
Animals in Fiji
Fiji has many beautiful land mammals. But since the islands are surrounded by so much ocean life, we will be exploring many ocean animals this month!

There are three kinds of iguanas endemic to Fiji. Remember, endemic means it only lives naturally in a certain area. The three kinds of iguanas are: crested iguanas, banded iguanas, and banded lau iguanas. The Fiji Banded Iguana (bulabula Iguana) is the national animal of Fiji. If you want to see footage of all these, ask a parent to help you add English captions to this German video:
Since Fiji is made up of hundreds of islands, it’s only right to consider the animals surrounding Fiji! Most of the animal life in and around Fiji are ocean animals!
The flying foxes in Fiji can be found in Australia as well. Here is a closeup of a rescued bat.

Fiji’s favorite sport is rugby. All rugby teams are called “Sevens.” The Fijian rugby team is officially called the “Flying Fijians,” although most people just refer to them as the Fiji Sevens. All of Fiji loves the sport! Even after a bad cyclone damaged many houses in 2020, the people were still happy because their rugby team won the game in Hong Kong that year. The first Olympic Gold medal for Fiji was won by the Fiji sevens in 2016. The Fiji rugby team will be playing in the Olympics in July 2024!
