Ready? Now read on to learn who is the “bishop of the Moon”!
The Apollo 11 space mission began with the launch from Cape Canaveral on July 16, 1969. When this spacecraft landed and Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a 1917 Code of Canon Law was called into effect!
This 1917 canon law states (though a bit murkily) that any newly discovered territory is added to the diocese from where the expedition set out.
This means that since the Apollo 11 space mission took off from Cape Canaveral (which is in the Diocese of Orland), the newly “discovered” territory from this mission falls under the purview of the Bishop of Orlando!
The Bishop of Orlando was nicknamed “The Moon Bishop” and to this day, the Vatican has never officially stated whether this diocesan ruling will be changed.
