Keep reading…we can explain WHY we had to break this rule.
Here’s the thing:
We don’t sell fiction.
Don’t get me wrong–fiction is amazing.
However, our primary goal is to provide children with the truth of the Catholic faith through the lives of the saints and other profound miracles, mysteries, and wonders.
(note: this is the #1 reason our Glory Stories are meticulously researched—we want to give children the TRUE life account).
However, every once and a while, there is a fiction book that is so good….we just can’t pass it up.
In the past, this was the ONLY fiction book we felt needed to be a part of the store.
Now, I want to share with you the TWO other books that were so good, we not only carry them…Holy Heroes is now the publisher of them.
Dear God, I Don’t Get It (2nd Edition)
From the very first chapter, laughter fills the air as families delve into Aaron’s journey. But amidst the laughter lies a profound message about God’s divine plan unfolding in our lives. The subject of prayer, often difficult to discuss with children, is skillfully addressed in a way that resonates deeply with young hearts.
Children are spellbound by this captivating tale, as evidenced by the enthusiastic response from an 11-year-old reader who devoured the book not once, but twice, in a matter of days. With an abundance of praise, he declares it “AWESOME” and “FANTASTIC,” highlighting the book’s ability to evoke worry, inspiration, and an eagerness to perform acts of kindness. This captivating story sparks a desire in young readers to do great things and inspires them to live out their faith in tangible ways.
As a parent, you’ll appreciate how Dear God, I Don’t Get It weaves important theological truths into a heartwarming story. It delves into topics such as redemptive suffering, dying to self, and forgiveness with sensitivity and grace. Your child will learn valuable lessons about honesty, intent, and the power of heroic sacrifice to bring true peace and joy. This book serves as a helpful tool for parents to explore and explain complex theological concepts to their preteens, while deepening their own understanding of the Catholic faith.
Being a father of three boys very close in age to the three brothers in Patti Armstrong’s books I can relate to so many of the stories she shares. I would recommend this book to all parents and children from 8 – 12 years of age. It will resonate with both the parents and the children. When we let go and let God we discover we might have gotten something better than we asked for in our prayer.

Dear God, You Can’t Be Serious! (2nd Edition)
Readers will embark on a thrilling adventure with a mischievous main character, Luke, who navigates real challenges and discovers the transformative power of doing the right thing, even when it’s difficult. Through Luke’s journey, this book imparts essential lessons about acceptance, understanding, and the nature of God’s responses to our prayers.
Luke’s encounters—be it on a family vacation, a friend’s farm, or his quest for attention—reveal the profound truth that we may not always be in control of our circumstances, but we have the power to choose how we react to them.
Parents and children between the ages of 8 and 12 will find themselves captivated by the profound wisdom embedded within these pages. One parent shares how their special needs teenage son, typically uninterested in reading, has carried this book around for days, captivated by its storyline and the relatable experiences of the characters.
The spiritual lesson of waiting patiently for God’s answers to our prayers resonates deeply, reminding us all of the power of trust in our journey of faith. This book strikes a chord with families as it explores the transformative power of letting go and allowing God to guide our lives.
In an era when children’s authors promote pop culture values in stories that ignore their readers’ spiritual yearnings, Armstrong offers a wonderful real-life example of questioning and commitment to one’s faith that results in a genuine friendship with God. By providing discussion questions at the end of the book, the author gives readers and leaders the tools to understand the story’s message.

Wondering about the only other fiction book we carry?
Clare’s Costly Cookie
Nine-year-old Clare, in her inimitable way, models for children that following Jesus Christ and striving for true holiness are worth any cost. With spirit and spunk, she demonstrates for young readers that living the holy Catholic faith is not only exciting but better than gooey, warm chocolate chip cookies.
You can learn more about this great chapter book in this blog post.
I love the short but very full chapters. My kids and I have been reading one each night. I plan to read it again as we journey toward 1st communion.

Ken Davison created Glory Stories, which became a weekly radio series heard globally on the Ave Maria Satellite Radio Network and EWTN’s radio network, WEWN. In 2007, he and his wife, Kerri, founded Holy Heroes–and their children stepped in to help shortly thereafter to create the online “Adventures” for Advent, Lent, Spiritual Adoption, and Marian Consecration.
