The Feast of the Presentation (also known as Candlemas) is coming up on February 2nd
In the Gospel of Luke, we read that when Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple (in accordance with Jewish tradition), they met the prophet Simon. Recognizing that this baby was the long-awaited Messiah, Simon exclaimed, “My eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel.”
This declaration of Jesus being the “light of revelation” developed into the Church’s tradition of blessing candles on this feast. Learn more about how this Catholic tradition developed HERE.
Here is an easy craft to help kids celebrate!
Here is what you need:
- Holy Heroes Votive Candle Holder (print below!)
- Votive candles
- Scissors
- Coloring supplies
Cut out each votive candle holder and have each child color their own.
Then, loop the holder around a small votive candle (we get ours from the Dollar Store).
Tape or glue holder to secure the candle.
Place your candles on your home altar or on your dinner table as a liturgical centerpiece!
