Once we announced Jellybean: A Baby’s Journey to God, we had a few people ask us if miscarried babies become angels.

Instead of giving a family grieving a miscarriage an angel memorial or a book that will confuse children by saying their sibling is now an angel, this picture book approaches the topic in a gentle and comforting way.

Here are a few new reviews from Catholic mothers who have recently read Jellybean:

“I lost my second child over eleven years ago. I didn’t have a lot of resources ready to hand then, but what I did have led me to understand that my child was at the throne of the Lord and could pray for us who remained on earth. It is unreal to see every bit of that in word and image in this book. This is what I believe, this is what my family is living. It’s comforting and encouraging to hold this story in my hands.”

“I’m so thankful for this beautiful book. As I read the story to my children tears came to my eyes at the beautiful depiction of the baby with our Blessed Mother in heaven and of her praying for her parents and siblings.”

“I am not a crier so if that tells you anything, I cried when reading this book. This book is beautiful. Good for kids to help them understand miscarriage or even the parents to understand.

“This book is such a beautiful reminder that having a sibling in Heaven as a personal intercessor is such a gift. This truly supports our family’s goal and mission: to keep each other safe and healthy and help each other get to Heaven so we can all be together with our little saints. Beautiful!”

However, while we do know that miscarried babies do not become angels, the Catholic Church does know quite a bit about angels. We created this picture book to answer some commonly asked questions and families have found it incredibly helpful!

In a straightforward Q&A approach, we answer what children ask us about angels:

  • When did God make angels–and why?
  • How are they like us–and how are they not like us?
  • What do they do? (And you’ll learn many, many Scriptural examples!)
  • Are all angels alike? What did St Thomas Aquinas tell us?
  • Where can you go which will always be full of angels?
  • Prayers the angels say, prayers we can say to the angels–so much more!

The Children’s Book of Angels presents Catholic teaching about angels for children ages 3-7.

If you are looking for more information about the confusion surrounding miscarried babies becoming angels, Mary Haseltine has a great blog post where she goes into greater detail about the distinctions between humans and angels.
