A few weeks ago, we sent out a form and included this question:

“What resources do you wish you had after losing a baby?”

While we received a range of feedback, one specific need was brought up again and again:

How to talk about miscarriage with kids. To date, our five kids, ages 9, 7, 5, and twin 3-year-olds do not know of our 3 miscarriages. We’re unsure of how to talk to them about it.

“We were at a complete loss how to explain the loss of our daughter to our other children.

“a picture book…I had two little girls. They were very confused”

“I do wish we had had a storybook to share with our children

“Resources to assist in talking/explaining what happened and how God wasn’t being mean even though our family was hurting”

Ways to talk to your children about their miscarried sibling”

While we had suspected that such a need existed, we had no idea just how many families were struggling to explain miscarriage to their living children.

Last summer, we began working with Theoni Bell to write the script for Glory Story Volume 18: Our Lady of Champion.

After this project was finished, Theoni shared that she and her husband had written a beautiful poem after losing their daughter at 27 weeks gestation.

Today, we are honored to share that picture book with you.

Little Jellybean, nicknamed by her family, experiences an exciting world of sound and sensations inside her mother’s womb, encountering the voices and personalities of her loving family.

Just when she has nearly outgrown her mother’s belly, a surprising visitor guides her to a new home. There, Jellybean is given a mission to help her family…

For families experiencing (or who have experienced) infant loss, this picture book shows the important role these babies still have for their families.

We are also currently sorting through the responses we received from mothers who have experienced an infant loss. You can get a sneak peek on the resources page we are building to help families going through this loss at holyheroes.com/loss

We had a few people ask us if miscarried babies become angels. The answer is “no.”

Angels are distinct creatures created by God, not something that humans become after death. We actually know quite a bit about these heavenly creatures and we created this picture book to answer some commonly asked questions.
