There is a “secret” in the first days of November.

Learning about this “secret” can really capture the imaginations of your children:

  • making them more aware of their connection
  • with the people God places around them,
  • both the living and the dead.

On November 2nd, the Church focuses on The Church Suffering (the faithful departed who are being cleansed of their sins in Purgatory).

The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us about our relationship through Christ with others that not even death can overcome:

“In this wonderful exchange, the holiness of one profits others, well beyond the harm that the sin of one could cause others. Thus recourse to the communion of saints lets the contrite sinner be more promptly and efficaciously purified of the punishments for sin.” (1475)

BUT–here’s what most Catholics don’t know about first 8 days in November:

We can help the Faithful Departed by “boosting our prayers” to get a “plenary indulgence” specifically for the dead by following some simple steps included on the back of our newest card.

There are specific requirements–and special ones on All Souls Day!–but this card explains them all.

Perfect to distribute for parish, Catholic school, Halloween or All Saints party!

PLUS with this card, you can note the names of each dearly departed by the date you will offer an indulgence for them–this will act as a reminder to pray for them on that day!

Parishes: bulk discounts automatically apply so PLEASE get these cards to hand out to your parishioners. We need to pray for souls in Purgatory!

REMEMBER: Praying for the living and the dead is one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy!

If you want a great way to teach your children ALL the Works of Mercy, try our coloring book, our full-color book, and companion card game here.

For older kids, you can find a great discussion about praying for the dead in the Bible, in Maccabees chapter 12, which concludes with the prayers of Judas Maccabeus for the sins of his fallen soldiers.
